Day Into Night
A rose petal sunset melts into the western sea
Its last fragrant breath mingles with the sound
of church bells and seagulls’ flight through the air
Its perfumed wind caresses two toddlers’ gilded hair
A red bucket and sandy toes,
Like the last drops of juice from an orange,
They squeeze the final pleasures from the day
In darkening depths of shades of blue
A whale rolls over turning day to night
The waves hum a lullaby
As they sweep the tell-tale footsteps from the sand
Only the wind carries traces of barking dogs and children’s laughter
As it shares the tale with the emerald green depths of the forest of cedar trees
Stars twinkle and windows glow
As night blankets the sleeping land
